General Funston asked the War Department to mobilize a large portion of the national guards along the Mexican boundary from Brownsville to the Pacific. Washington confirms the note condemning Carranza and asserts the United States will not withdraw troops, with mobilization proceeding and Congress prepared to act on border defense measures.
Paris June 20 The war office reports three German attacks last night on French positions northwest of hill No 321 were repulsed by French machine gun fire. German bombardment continues near Vaux as the offensive wears on.

The first storage battery electric car will run between High Point and Thomasville tomorrow morning by the Carolina and Yadkin River railway. It travels six round trips daily with a 30 minute schedule, charging overnight at the C and Y R station. Fare is 15 cents with stops at South High Point Prospect the Thomasville Wye and Thomasville station.
Madrid June 20. King Alphonso received telegrams from a committee representing the Spanish colony in Mexico City urging mediation between Mexico and the United States to avert war. The group sent messages to the Spanish Press Association and to governments and press of South American republics seeking backing for the plan.
The Western Union Telegraph company announced that employees with more than one year of service who join the military will receive half pay while in service, as long as this combined pay does not exceed their normal salaries.
