Washington June 17. The U S government will keep expeditionary forces in northern Mexico and Pershing will act to protect car columns and confront bandits along the border despite a warning from Carranza commanders. No direct Pershing communication yet and reports of further threats and border raids continue.
General Funston reported to the war department that General Pershing was informed by General Trevino of Chihuahua that any movement of the American expeditionary troops in any direction would be deemed a signal for an attack by Mexican forces.
San Antonio June 17 The arrival at Laredo of Philip Shanna consul general at Monterey shows the state department ordered him and J H Silliman consul at Saltillo to the American side of the river.
The Woman's Missionary Society of the First Baptist Church invites all women to a social Monday afternoon at 3 30. The gathering promises special importance and pleasure to attendees. An offering for state missions will be collected.
Partly cloudy tonight and Sunday with likely thunder showers near the coast. Moderate south to southeast winds.
High Point residents are urged to attend a mass meeting at 8 o clock Monday night in the auditorium to discuss the citys need for paved streets. Mayor Murphy of Greensboro will speak as the out of town guest. All citizens are invited regardless of creed or opinion.
St Louis June 17 leaders of the Woman's Party and the National American Woman Suffrage Association denounce the Democratic platform as inadequate and vow to resume fight in Congress for a constitutional amendment. Miss Ann Martin says Washington return will be quick and a “good fight” awaits if needed. Carrie Chapman Catt condemns the plank as vague political expediency.
The Democratic party adopts the Wilson platform amid internal debate. Party leaders frame the move as a clear mandate for progressive reform and national policy direction. Supporters praise unity while critics seek broader concessions on key issues.
The Democratic national convention approved the platform as Wilson and the resolutions committee proposed, including woman suffrage. A fierce intra party debate nearly cost the plank its passage, with Governor Ferguson leading a minority report opposing federal suffrage guidance. The vote ended 58 to 41 with the platform adopted. The row overshadowed Ireland sympathies and earlier efforts to read the document.
The Southern Textile association adopted a plan to print and send to Southern governors the annual address by J. M. Davis of Newberry cotton mills arguing mills face misrepresentation in labor reform. Davis urged that federal law favors newsboys and farm children while denying mill town children rights. Officers elected include KF. E B. Heyner president J. M. Davis vice president FP. G. Cobb chairman A. B. Carter secretary Marshall Dillingham treasurer.
Copenhagen reports via London that two large German steamers were torpedoed in the Baltic last evening. A Swedish fisherman said they saw the vessels sink after exchanging cannon fire.
City wide interdenominational revival concludes after tonight and Sunday services. Evangelist Dr. Black and singer Mr. Burr praised for work. offerings to be freely given. Prayer meetings, Sunday schools, and closing auditorium service planned. crowd capacity expected.
British steamer Eden sank last night after a collision in the English Channel. Of 79 crew, three officers are missing while three officers and several men were saved. The incident was announced by the official press bureau in London.
Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels visited the Lake Bluffs naval training station on his way home from the St. Louis Democratic National Convention. Captain W A Moffett arranged a special entertainment for the secretary who was expected to address the apprentice seamen.
The weather bureau predicts generally fair and warmer conditions across the southeastern states for the coming week starting tomorrow. Local thunderstorms are expected mainly in coastal districts late in the week.
