Charlotte Buying Club Opens Its Own Store in Grassroots Gamble
The McCall Street Buying Club in Charlotte's Northside grew from seven residents with $6.50 to a 1,000-member cooperative operating a full-service store since September. Members buy wholesale, workers donate time, and profits may rebate members after capital needs are met. The Charlotte Area Fund aided the venture with $13,000 and supports manager Joseph Hayes who coordinates pickups, audits, and relocation for redevelopment.
