Argentine military leaders staged a coup against President Ramon S. Castillo over neutrality policy. Castillo moved government to a warship and promised stability while defense forces controlled Buenos Aires, with light opposition and unclear Allied alignment.
Allied dispatch from North Africa reports British battle cruisers and destroyers shelling the Italian fortress island Pantelleria for the third and fourth times that week. Italian batteries offered slight return fire with no damage or casualties returned by the British.
Allied air and naval forces intensify bombardment of Pantelleria as part of a strategy to clear the central Mediterranean bottleneck between Tunisia and Sicily.
