Low Interest Federal Money For Housing Mortgages

William Sidell, head of the Carpenters Union, urged at the 1974 union convention that the federal government expand the FHA and provide direct funds to home buyers at 4 to 5 percent interest. He argues this would ease rising mortgage costs, aid 850,000 union members facing job losses, and speed housing industry revival. Critics warn it could raise inflation via increased federal spending.
