UNESCO backs regional news agency push in Latin America
A UNESCO led Intergovernmental Conference on Communications Policies in Latin America and the Caribbean urged creating or strengthening national news agencies to form a regional agency. It called for regional data banks, communications schools, low cost TV and radio systems, and satellite information regulation. Critics from Inter-American Press Association and broadcasters warned government controls threaten press freedom. Brazil voiced skepticism about a regional agency, saying it would disadvantage existing agencies.
