Seventeen year old death in Caldwell County and new cases in Catawba and Caldwell counties followed the second mass inoculation drive ending in Catawba. Immunization reached 14 761 children under ten with 95 percent coverage.

Safety spotters urged to report reckless drivers

Sabre Jet Sets World Speed Record in California
Lt. Col. William F. Barns piloted an F86D Sabre at Thermal California to a new world air speed record of 715.7 mph. The 33 year old veteran eclipsed the previous 698.505 mph mark set by Capt. J Slade Nash last November on the same 1.863 mile course. Barns completed two contest runs with eight legs averaging 713.6 mph on the first, and improved on the return with higher speeds, all at about 100 feet altitude.
