Duke Power Co directors authorize construction of a two unit nuclear steam electric station at Lake Keowee in Oconee County. The project aims for May 1971 first unit operation with total cost around 207 million for the nuclear plant plus 86.3 million for dam and hydro facilities, bringing the Keowee Toxaway project to about 700 million.
A college reunion on the Anacostia River ended in tragedy as a boat sank and six people were aboard. Four were rescued but three remained missing, including Mattie D. James and Valeria A. Johnson. Police identified operator James Henry Moore and his brother Jackie as part of the group. Rescue efforts continued along the river near National Airport.
Old East Dormitory on the Elon College campus burned Monday night after a desk was found burning in the nearby West Building. Firefighters controlled the blaze in about two hours. damage estimated at 150000 dollars to the building and 125000 dollars to chemical supplies, partly insured. No injuries reported.
