Democrats meeting at the national governors conference push to back President Johnson’s Vietnam conduct with a two thirds vote. A bipartisan approach is planned, aiming to involve Republicans after a draft resolution is completed. The group also considers reviving the old resolutions process amid debates on racial equality proposals.
Clarence Adams a Korean War turncoat arrived in San Francisco on Independence Day with his Chinese wife and two children aboard the President Cleveland. He paid 1800 dollars for the voyage funded by his Memphis mother Gladys Peoples. He says democracy, despite faults, is better than communism and he plans to visit Memphis after a short stay in San Francisco.
The Associated Press reports 567 traffic deaths across the three day Independence Day weekend, a new record for any Fourth. Drownings numbered 215, boating accidents 52, bringing total accidental deaths to 834 over the holiday period.
A 23 year old Virginia convict surrendered in Gaston County after a three hour car pursuit during which he held Mr and Mrs Bobby J Clemmons at gunpoint and forced them to drive. The Clemmons were released unharmed and the kidnapper Robert Hundley was jailed for illegal flight and kidnapping pending arraignment. Police tracked the yellow and black 1956 Mercury through Rowan and Cabarrus counties before closure in Gaston County.
The 29 ton Saturn I stage lifted from Cape Kennedy to orbit as NASA tested liquid hydrogen for manned spaceflight. An engine restart proved feasible in space amid clear TV images and reports of stable, low slosh hydrogen in the 18 foot tank. Ground stations monitored 10 tons of liquid hydrogen and praised the fuel's behavior during the second orbit.
National Guardsmen reinforced police in Omaha's near North Side after a third night of rock throwing and looting. About 78 arrests occurred, 19 of them juveniles, with two officers injured. Looters targeted ~10 businesses and armed guards were posted by owners. Governor Morrison called it not a racial clash but youths causing destruction.
Teamsters Union President James R Hoffa told about 2000 delegates in Miami Beach that only a federal anti strike law could destroy organized labor. He urged increased political activity to prevent congressional passage of restrictive labor laws while noting his pending appeals and longtime prison sentences. Senator Eugene McCarthy warned against trial by press and Congress.
In Saigon after a Southeast Asia trip Adm. Sharp said U S forces in South Viet Nam are enough to take the offensive and pressure the enemy. He added manpower levels could rise if the enemy acts, and praised the air power and team supporting ground troops. He met Gen. Westmoreland and spoke after SEA Treaty Org talks in Canberra.
London residents report a religious revival linked to Billy Graham's crusade in Chelsea. The Rev. Edgar Loasby notes many new people attend church, while two 19 year old art students Nina deTolly and Dorothy Outman plan to sing religious songs in Carnaby Street, praising gospel hymns and street meetings.
U S Navy fighter bombers attacked two North Vietnamese torpedo boats 38 miles southeast of Haiphong early today. One Skyhawk was shot down but rescued from the Gulf of Tonkin. Navy and Air Force planes flew 91 multiplane missions against North Viet Nam, targeting oil storage areas near Haiphong and Thanh Hoa as the air war continued.
