Undersecretary of State George W. Ball said Hanoi observers report greater war weariness and a psychological change among officials but no political decision yet to seek peace in South Vietnam. He cautioned against reading too much into the mood shift.
U S air forces dodged a heavy onslaught of Soviet made missiles over North Viet Nam in Red River Valley. Officials say 27 to 29 SAMs were fired at U S planes though duplicates may exist. Four SAM sites and two fuel depots near Hanoi were hit by F105 Thunderchiefs and F4C Phantoms.
The Ford Foundation awards North Carolina Symphony $1 million, including $250,000 outright and a $750,000 challenge grant to be matched by June 30, 1971. Governor Moore praises the donation as boosting state culture while Dr. Benjamin Swalin says funds will expand the orchestra and season toward a resident and touring ensemble. The grant aims to create a full-size, professional organization as soon as matched.
A Chicago AP report notes 42 states and DC levy general sales taxes and all but North Carolina tax cigarettes. Gasoline taxes vary 5 to 11 cents per gallon with Hawaii and its county at 11 cents. Virginia approves a 2 percent sales tax effective Sept 1. New Jersey raises cigarette tax to 11 cents.
Former Senator Harry F. Byrd has lapsed into a coma from a malignant brain tumor, confirmed by his son Richard E. Byrd. The family states the comatose state has not been consistent until recently and that Byrd is unlikely to recover.
Vice President Humphrey urged governors to back Johnson’s policy in Viet Nam. Governor Romney of Michigan expressed doubt that now is the right time or place for a showdown with Communism, saying he opposes a Democratic resolution and is unsure of the fundamental policy.
President Johnson asserted that Communists cannot win in Viet Nam and voiced optimism we are on the way to solving the problem. He planned Vietnam conferences at his ranch with McNamara and Harriman, and cited bombing raids wiping out significant portions of North Viet Nam's petroleum storage. Johnson also discussed race issues, travel plans, and a potential cut in planned bomb and ammunition purchases to save hundreds of millions.
Denise Sue Clinton, 9, vanished July 8 last year during summer break. Investigators linked to FBI and Kansas City police seek Robert Lee Hays, arrested in Oklahoma City on unlawful flight warrants, to corroborate the kidnapping claim. Hays denies the charges as relatives hope for the girl’s survival while awaiting Topeka theft and other warrants.
About 197 000 Volkswagen automobiles were ordered recalled to local dealers for inspection of front axle ball joint assemblies. The recall involves 175 000 Beetle sedans and Karmann Ghia models and about 22 000 square back sedans built between Aug. 1, 1965, and mid January this year. Volkswagen of America in Englewood Cliffs New Jersey announced the action.
