Fire kills five at North Carolina prison over mattress protest
In McDowell County a blaze started by inmates protesting disciplinary actions killed five prisoners and injured 24 as about 20 polyurethane mattresses were piled on a table and set alight. Officials say nonflammable beds are being phased in after a prior Craggy Prison fire. Inmates claim frustration over curtailed privileges and reduced exercise, with guards racing to lock doors and evacuate.
