Death of Chief Justice Richmond Pearson in 1877
Archives recount the death and funeral of North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Richmond M. Pearson. He died after a stroke near Winston on January 7 1877, with his body later laid in state in Raleigh and burial in Statesville before final arrangements shifted to Raleigh for a solemn Capitol ceremony and funeral at Christ Episcopal Church and Oakwood Cemetery. The obsequies drew officials, bar members, and mourners, marking a historic state tribute.
