Engineering Marvel Reveals Petersburg Mine Tunnel

Petersburg Va January 21 AP One of the Civil War’s greatest engineering feats is unveiled as the main tunnel for the under Confederate mine near Petersburg is reopened. The 510 foot underground passage links to the crater and a large bomb proof room, with 4000 pounds of explosives laid beneath Elliott’s salient. The blast on July 30, 1864 failed to end the war, delaying Meade’s advance and shaping the Crater assault. The tunnel’s restoration may become a shrine to American ingenuity.
