At least 25 injured as rival unions disrupt beer deliveries for a third day in Detroit. Drivers broke through a police line near Eckhardt and Coker Brewing Co to topple six beer trucks and return them to the yard.
President Roosevelt said he favors a five million dollar authorization for defense improvements on Guam but argues it does not necessarily entail fortifications. He distinguished authorization from appropriation and noted the bill aims to deepen the harbor expand marines housing and landing facilities for planes, not build fortifications.
Senator Barkley predicted not more than 20 votes opposed Hopkins for Secretary of Commerce as Hopkins faced continued attacks over WPA activity. Holt and Davis pressed for proof of political coercion while Reed joined in questioning WPA influence in Pennsylvania.
Sumter, Jan. 20. Ley T. Wilson, 43, farmer and coon hunter of Pilot Mountain, died in a sanatorium here from injuries after his automobile overturned near Rowland. A deputy sheriff, J. H. Godfrey, found Wilson unconscious about 60 feet from the wreck. The Pilot Mountain man reportedly suffered a stroke or heart attack before the crash.

Raleigh January 20 AP The legislature moved a bill by Representative Underwood Hertford to impose a new tax of one quarter of a cent per kilowatt hour on all electrical energy produced or sold in the state by public utilities. The measure would apply retroactively to 1935. The House led the day, with the Senate only briefly meeting and introducing new measures.
King Solomon Stovall, 24, a Granville county Black man, was executed by gas for the April 15 robbery murder of storekeeper R. T. Moore in the state prison at Raleigh. Witnesses noted the gas mask reduced facial contortions, with the execution starting at 11 01 and death at 11 15 after 11 minutes 40 seconds of exposure. Deputy W. T. Beasley, who arrested Stovall, reported the man confessed after initial denial and left $37 cash and about $100 in checks taken in the crime.
