Washington reports technical analysis shows the Soviet SA7 antiaircraft missile fielded by Arab forces was too slow to down high speed Israeli Skyhawks and its warhead insufficient to destroy many jets. U.S. military sources note only 2 of 28 Israeli planes struck by SA7s were lost.
Two Detroit officers died and two were wounded when they answered a family quarrel call. Sgt Leonard Todd 32 and Patrolman Edward Pakula 27 were fatally shot as they sought to quell gunfire from a house in a northeast Detroit neighborhood. A 15 year old boy was grazed. the gunman surrendered 16 minutes after the first call. The incident prompted gun control remarks from Police Commissioner Tannian.
The U S 4th Circuit Court of Appeals denied a plea to overturn a lower court ruling requiring the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board to modify its desegregation plan. The court said the feeder plan complies with judge McMillan's requirements for the current year and left only the 1974 75 plan as the remaining issue.
Washington AP report notes tax reform remains pending as Congress reconvenes. House Ways and Means Committee expected to resume February action while a joint committee weighs Nixon tax returns. Administration proposals include minimum tax changes and credits for elderly and private-school tuition. Senator McGovern urged reforms to raise revenue from the wealthy and corporations.
