Appalachian State University plans to withdraw from the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at the end of the 1968-69 school year after the conference denied proposals to raise athletic grants and relax eligibility rules. President W H Plemmons said Appalachian will pursue an independent path expanding athletic programs while honoring existing contracts and schedules.
In Southern Conference play Davidson and West Virginia, long noted as title favorites, each extended losing runs as Furman upset Clemson 70-68 and William and Mary beat Pitt 79-65. The Citadel meanwhile edged Loyola of New Orleans 61-59.

Princeton guard Thomforde scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Tigers to a 78-62 win over NYU at Madison Square Garden ending a three year absence. Oklahoma City fell 96-92 to Nevada Southern in Las Vegas as NSU rallied late behind Curtis Watson and Elbert Miller.
High Point Central Black Bison clash with Ben L Smith of Greensboro at Central High Gym tonight at 8 p m in the Central 4 A Conference opener. Smith brings height depth and a 6 2 0 0 record, while High Point counters with Kirkman Brewer and a strong inside outside game. The Greensboro squad relies on Shaw McAdoo and Williams to supply scoring and rebounding as Smith seeks its first win over High Point this season.
