AEC Ruling Keeps Duke Plant in Oconee County Debate
The Atomic Energy Commission affirmed a license allowing Duke Power to build a nuclear plant in Oconee County South Carolina despite a coalition of 11 Tar Heel cities led by Mayor J Garner Bagnal demanding a 4 percent equity to lower consumer costs. The cities vow federal court challenge, arguing the project is commercial despite a research license. This dispute widens with other cities supporting action against a would be tax funded atomic development.
