A five alarm office building fire on West 58th Street in Manhattan spread to five structures, including two converted apartments near Columbus Circle. Eight firefighters were overcome. an 80 year old woman Mrs Mayne McLain leaped to safety via a life net with leg injuries. Fire officials warned of potential wall collapse as flames began in a synthetic rubber plant and an explosion occurred. Winston Boy Jailed on Murder Charge in Forsyth County
Sixteen year old Tommy Lee Phillips confessed to shooting his parents in an New Year’s Eve killing in Winston-Salem. Sheriff Ernie Shore said the youth signed a statement claiming he shot his father after a quarrel over money and car keys and killed his mother when she went to the phone. Phillips was arrested with his 16 year old girlfriend Bessie Ruth Jenkins in York South Carolina, where they had allegedly planned to marry. The bodies were found the following afternoon after a neighbor raised the alarm.

Seamen Rescued After Steamer Grounding at Ocracoke
Coast guardsmen rescued 21 men from a fishing steamer driven aground on Ocracoke Island after a 11 crew leaped into the water amid 35 to 40 mph winds.
