Representatives from communities across the Piedmont Triad will meet Wednesday night at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro to establish transportation goals. The Piedmont Triad Council of Governments and the Transportation Institute of NC at A&T sponsor. The session will include speeches by Dr. Lewis Dowdy and Greensboro mayor Robert Davis.
High Point residents can join the annual city cleanup starting March 13 with city vehicles plowing through wards on a set schedule. Sponsored by the Chamber Beautification Committee and Public Works, the effort aims to improve safety and neighborhood appeal with free pickup in Ward 4 March 13–19 and Ward 3 March 20–26, then Ward 2 April 3–9 and Ward 11 April 10–16. Trash must be out on the first pickup day, in containers or tied in bundles, and kept neatly at the curb for one-time collection.

Gladys Hill reports a portable television stolen from her dining room while the house was unlocked. Other incidents include a tape player and six tapes taken from a car at Andrews High School, an alternator stolen from a car at Highland Cotton Mill, two hubcaps stolen from a car at Speedy’s Drive In, and several arrests for property damage hit and run and DUI. Deputies logged a break in at Speedy’s with beer and meats missing and two vending machines damaged, totaling 102 dollars. Jeff Welborn reported two tires stolen from his truck at home.
The preliminary hearing for fourteen alleged participants in a Feb 10 shootout at 612 Hulda St resumed with only two of up to six state witnesses testifying. Officers described orders to fire tear gas and later shots from inside the house, with Lt. Shaw Cooke wounded and in hospital.
Police report Friday incident string with at least three distinct wrecks. Injuries reported to Lincoln Dorothy Manley Helmstetler and Ronald Hill as they encountered vehicles on N. Wrenn Street near FE Washington Drive. Other drivers named include James Paul Korsey Dillon Omar Johnson and Johnny Lee Cole. Charges listed include leaving scene, following too closely, failure to yield, red light violation, and improper backing.
The Northwood Elementary School PTA board will meet Wednesday March 3 at 11 45 a.m. The agenda includes a business meeting a report from the nominating committee and reports from committee chairmen.
Campbell College President Dr Norman A Wiggins told a High Point Kiwanis Club audience that North Carolina private colleges are in serious financial trouble. He cited nationwide trends with two thirds of colleges facing problems and noted private schools save the state about 10 million dollars per plennium by not receiving tax subsidies. He urged citizens to study costs and press legislators for aid, naming Campbell among NC private schools and highlighting Buffalo University as a cautionary example.
