Base Overrun in Laos Tests Saigon Resolve

North Vietnamese forces overran Hill 31, a South Vietnamese paratrooper base in Laos, in a fierce hand to hand fight. The 450 man garrison was nearly wiped out as Hanoi pressed a Laos incursion. US air and helicopter support tried to blunt the assault and relieve the siege along Highway 9.

Mount Airy Detective Slain in Line of Duty

Mount Airy North Carolina police detective C Monroe Boggs aged 37 was shot dead while stopping a car during a stolen vehicle search. He died eight minutes before his 11 pm shift end at the intersection of US 52 and NC 89. He leaves a wife and two children and had four years on the force with prior sheriff and merchants patrol experience. His brother Roger Boggs is a Randolph County deputy sheriff.
