High Point Enterprise (Newspaper) - February 25, 1974, High Point, North Carolina Women Union members to form a coalition High Point Enterprise monday february 25,1974 7a he wants to take car with him by Isabelle Shelton Washington Nana the women a movement which is cropping up in the most unlikely places is about to flex its Muscles in the male dominated Banks of organized labor. Women members of Many International unions Are planning a historic conference next month March 23-24 in Chicago. Out of this is expected to come the coalition of labor Union women club which would have As its avowed purpose pushing the causes and interests of women from within the ranks of labor. Women from about 40 International unions so far have expressed interest in attending and the organizers expect participants from Many More unions by the time of the conference. Any woman with a Union card May attend and 1,0000 or More Are expected. The meetings Are open to press coverage a but reporters better sport Union cards too. Unions so far represented include the United Auto workers. Teamsters United mine workers United steel workers amalgamated clothing workers. State county and municipal employees amalgamated meat cutters and butchers International ladies garment workers retail clerks communication workers newspaper Guild. American federation of teachers and National education Assn. Its recognized As a Union now. A a it a really a historic first a Edith Van Horn of the United Auto workers says enthusiastically of the upcoming conference. A a it a the first time women Union members have sat Down in an Intra Union meeting called by us and for us a adds is. Van Horn a member of the a awl a Community action program staff and one of the organizers of the conference. While there have been occasional women a Trade Union conferences in the past they generally did not spread across Many unions a and they were organized and managed by male Union leaders who also made most of the speeches. This time no outside a a stars Are planned a and probably no male speakers at All. A a we la be our own stars a says Edith Van Horn the male president of the Philadelphia Al Cio attending a preliminary club conference in thai City last december found the going quite uncomfortable at times. This is not to say that women Union members plan to rail at their male colleagues throughout their two Days of meetings however. A a we re not anti male or even a anti establishment a insists Joyce Miller another club organizer who is executive assistant to the general officers of the amalgamated clothing workers. Nor does a what we re doing even smell of dual unionism a she adds. Quot we re not trying to set up new unions for women. We re trying to make things work better for them in the unions they belong to. A i identify first As a Trade unionist a a member of amalgamated. Within that framework i want to improve the situation for women everywhere. I see it As a Way for women from Many unions to come together so we can Zero in on a whole raft of issues that particularly affect women workers. A women organizing inside unions to act As a pressure group for their special concerns a is the Way Linda Tarr Whelan the state county and municipal employ yes Deputy director for program development put it. Issues in which the women Are especially interested a which elicit varying degrees of enthusiasm from their male Union leaders a Are child care centers full sick leave benefits for pregnant women the Impact of the Energy crisis on jobs minimum wage and full employment. The last three might seem to be of interest to both men and women but club organizers insist they Are of More importance to women because women generally Are at the Bottom of the economic ladder a the ones who earn the least Are the last hired and the first squeezed out when an Energy or other crisis forces a cutback. Affirmative action a a current code phrase for including or upgrading women a will get a lot of attention at the conference As it applies on the Job and also in the women a attempts to crack into the unions preponderant by male leadership.
