Four Day Week Pilot Studied By Chrysler UAW
Chrysler Corp and the UAW will study a four day 40 hour week for assembly line workers through a joint committee. Absenteeism at the drop in the industry is reported as a key concern, with up to 20 percent missing work on Mondays and Fridays. Small plants using a four day week report higher output and morale, while large plants remain to be tested. The plan could signal a broader shift if successful at Chrysler. Mrs Stephen Muskie, mother of Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine, wishes he would avoid politics for safety concerns in a tense world.
