Public Works Unveils Model Cities Rodent Control Plan

Jim Fulbright of the High Point Public Works displays a rat bait box for a Model Cities sponsored rodent control and stream clearing pilot. About 200 boxes will be deployed in phase one. Residents should avoid touching the boxes for full effect. the poison targets rats only. Data from the pilot will guide a citywide program in the Model Cities initiative which starts July 1.

Failed To Get Permit For Bald Head Island Pier

William R. Henderson of Carolina Cape Fear Corp said engineers believed a permit was unnecessary for a 75 to 100 foot finger pier into Baldhead Creek replacing a dilapidated structure. Army Engineers opened a 30 day comment period. critics fear private development will harm the island’s natural marshlands and wildlife. Henderson pledged to seek permit approval or alter the pier as needed amid opposition from Gov. Scott and conservationists.

Blood Donors Listed At February Bloodmobile Visit

The February Bloodmobile visit to the city collected 314 donations with 34 potential donors unable to give for medical reasons. Sponsored by the Industrial Management Club of High Point, at least 144 donors represented member organizations. Major contributors included Myrtle Desk Co. 34, Thomas Car Works 32, Hatteras Yacht Co. 27, Indian Head Hosiery 26, Carolina Container 13, Carolina Springs 11, General Steel 11, plus Factors Inc., Glenola Frame, Micro-Products, Prelude Corp., and Reliance Universal. Notable donors: Emerson seven gallons. Atkinson and Hubbard four gallons. Hayworth three gallons. Williamson, Royal, Payne, Chappell two gallons. John C. Martin, Jerry Parks, Mrs. Ann Holt, David Rogers, and A. F. Martin listed as gallon club members.

Stores Close City Blue Law Back In Effect Again

A state court ruling certifies the High Point blue law case to Guilford County Superior Court lifting a 13 month enforcement ban. Discount stores K Mart Zayre’s and Sky City must still close Sunday while drug, grocery, and service stations may open. Police arrested about 40 employees during earlier protests.

Repairs Set At 112000 Permit Issued To Rebuild Burned Store

A city inspections division issued six building permits totaling 200040. Chief Inspector Freeman Hill granted a 112890 permit to Coolidge Murrow to rebuild the Country Furniture Store on Idol Street after a major early November 1970 fire. The project covers 24654 square feet. Additional permits include 17 new houses valued at 182010, and various repairs and additions across multiple streets including N Main Street and S Main Street. Westminster Co. secured 15 dwellings at 10000 each, with most on Graves Street and Hoover Avenue.

Surplus Food Increase Reported in 1970 This Year

A Guilford County surplus food report by Warren Smith shows 1970 totals rising in High Point and across the county. Free foods issued countywide reached 104,142 persons, a 20 percent rise from 1959 level, with High Point at 33,156 persons, up 26 percent from 1969. Food valued at 1,140,450 dollars was distributed in 1970, up from 885,159 in 1969. The county saw 30,261 eligible families and 75,878 individuals on public assistance, while 28,264 needy persons not on aid received foods. Greensboro alone saw an 18 percent increase in use of free foods, rising to 70,986.

Federal Funds Sought For Guilford County Planning

Guilford County plans to obtain federal aid to fund a four year comprehensive planning program across eight core areas. The board expects a 5000 to 8000 dollar grant this fiscal year to revise the 1966 economic base study expand the 1968 land potential study and conduct land use and structural surveys and related studies. A pilot citizen participation program and quarterly public information newsletter are included to boost community involvement through 1974.

Republican Gains In Last Election Analyzed By BRYAN HAISLIP

North Carolinians elected more Republicans to office last fall than ever before. The GOP now holds about 265 posts from county to Congress, a net gain of roughly 40 since 1968. Party leaders note grassroots gains despite a state legislature loss and back leadership questions.
