NORWALK Calif Feb 1 A large military transport crash occurred in a densely populated Los Angeles suburb. The Civil Aeronautics Administration reported 42 aboard and cited witnessing evidence of a collision with a single engine craft. Military Air Transport Service crew numbered seven with 35 personnel aboard.

Snow Strands Major Asheville Highways In Western North Carolina

Snow depths up to a foot and sheets of ice blocked Western North Carolina routes including U S 441 through the Great Smoky Mountains. Highways 19 23 25 70 and 221 were unsafe without chains. Linville and Newfound Gap saw heavy accumulation while Murphy received rain that turned to melting snow. Plows worked to reopen U S 441 and temperatures fell from 188 to 24 as winds lashed the region.

Paddling Charges Dismissed in Cincinnati Case

A criminal case against 22 year old teacher Gayle Graner over paddling an 11 year old pupil was dropped. The parents of Roscoe McGeorge filed a $2500 civil suit as the criminal charges were withdrawn. Judge Frank Gusweiler praised the teacher’s standing in the community. Graner said she paddied the boy after he refused to follow instruction.
