The exact crash cause and pilot fate remain unclear amid questions over helicopter origins and rescuers. Bergeron reportedly endured fatigue after parachuting into a river and being hoisted to safety on the second helicopter attempt.
A Duke Power spokesman said about 150 workers were repairing power lines after a winter storm knocked out service in several areas including Charlotte. North Vietnam refused to admit H Ross Perot and his two planeloads of Christmas gifts for POWs. He offered 1 400 canned dinners for North Vietnamese orphans and said he would fly gifts directly to Hanoi. Perot met with the North Vietnamese Embassy official Vu Tien and was denied permission to land or deliver his proposal. He remained hopeful and stressed humanitarian aims independent of the US government.
After a three day Viet Cong cease-fire, allied forces report renewed combat across South Vietnam. U S and South Vietnamese commands accuse the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese of violations while gunships and bombers continue operations. American battlefield deaths rise toward 40,000 with heavy casualties reported on all sides during the 24 hour cease-fire period.
A group of 152 American wives and children, who traveled from Paris after Christmas seeking news of missing or captured U.S. servicemen in North Vietnam, met Hanoi officials for a brief discussion. Hanoi said prisoners could be freed only as part of a broader peace settlement, after a 25 minute briefing on history and policy.
