US command said Viet Cong violations occurred during a period of fighting near Da Nang and Saigon. One US service member died and about 60 were wounded in a village south of Da Nang. A Christmas Eve radio broadcast urged American troops to divert and promised a spear in My Tho Mekong Delta. The Viet Cong released 115 South Vietnamese soldiers to mark the nine year anniversary of the National Liberation Front.
In Rabat, 14 Arab states and the Palestine movement failed to reach a unified plan against Israel. The conference produced no communique and ended with disagreement over pursuing a political settlement. Reported achievement: at least 19 million dollars pledged to the PLO, with Yasser Arafat said to have secured private promises.

The Dakotas low was moving toward the state tonight, with clear skies before its arrival. Lows ranged from the 20s in the mountains to the 30s and 40s elsewhere, with Asheville at 28 and Cape Hatteras at 47.
The Associated Press reports three North Carolina women expect letters from husbands held as POWs. Barbara Wells of Goldsboro and James Hiteshew of Mount Airy learned their spouses, Air Force captains, were among 131 prisoners named by two American women who visited Hanoi. Hopes for Christmas letters rise as Wells notes past communications. Hiteshew last heard six months ago, captured in 1967. Theresa Runyan of Sumter, wife of Lt. Col. Albert Runyan, awaits word, while David Hatcher of Mount Airy also anticipated news. The list includes five from North Carolina and one from South Carolina.
AP reports Los Angeles hobo Tingle, 50, gained a $5 reward for helping foil a warehouse theft, though he dismisses the prize and says food is plentiful around the city. He recalls seeing thieves steal lingerie worth $500 from Weltman Terminal Co and guiding police to their hideout. He jokes about buying tobacco and jeans with the money.
