Heavy snowfall across New York City snarled transport as six inches of snow and high winds created treacherous conditions nationwide from Maine to Virginia Beach. Mayor V Lindsay directed crews by telephone and flew back Friday to supervise snow removal after directing operations from the Batamas in the early hours of the storm.

Sergeant David Mitchell, one of two soldiers charged in the My Lai massacre, testified at the Pentagon that he is not guilty. James Knox, 22, of Long Beach, known as the other driver, cried after a head-on Christmas crash that killed three members of another Long Beach family and left a five year old survivor.
