Riverboats and River Life Along the Ohio River
Fred Way and Tom Miller, riverboat pilots separated by nearly a thousand miles, share a lifelong connection to the Ohio River. Way, now 76, reflects on a river evolved from a treacherous, paddlewheel era to a modern, dammed system while editing a quarterly Ohio life magazine aboard the Delta Queen. Across from Cincinnati, Captain Harry Louden recalls buoying with improvised floats before 1929, as steel towns from Pittsburgh to McKees Rocks faced mill closings that drain jobs and tax bases, even as the Upper Ohio Valley still yields a third of the nation’s steel and a booming coal industry in the tri-state region.
