Experts say only giant observatories with large lenses might glimpse the Apollo 4 spacecraft as a tiny dot crossing the moon under ideal conditions. Regular home telescopes cannot provide a view, so plan for public observatory broadcasts instead.
Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman James Lovell and William Anders launched into a lunar orbit at 4 59 am EST and began live TV from about 150 miles up. They described the cratered surface and offered names for features as Earth watched a dramatic, distant tour of the moon and its stark landscape.
Washington AP report says GNP will grow in Q4 though inflation targets loom. Commerce Department notes surge driven by business spending on new plant and equipment, housing, inventories, and state local outlays. The fourth quarter outlook remains buoyant despite tax hikes.

Wives and children greet the 82 Pueblo crewmen released after 11 months as North Korea captives. Navy flew families to Miramar and set up the Pink Palace hospital, with debriefings and medical checks planned. The Navy paid $25,475 for 43 families and 167 dependents expected, with visits possible two weeks to two months. Mrs Garcia from Point Mugu, whose husband is a Pueblo storekeeper, spoke of the long separation.
President elect Nixon argued for better protection of intelligence ships to avoid a repeat of the Pueblo seizure. He suggested having nearby ships or bases ready to aid in case of attack, but stopped short of advocating constant escort and air cover. Defense officials countered that spy missions cannot always be shielded and cost prohibitive escorts would reduce effectiveness.

In Vietnam 540,000 U.S. servicemen observe a uneasy truce as Billy Graham and Bob Hope deliver messages and entertainment to the fighting men.
US and South Vietnamese forces halted fighting with Viet Cong and North Vietnamese after an all day battle Monday in which South Vietnamese claim 159 enemy deaths. By noon, US reports noted no major actions, while DMZ incidents exceeded 1,100 since bombing halt orders. A Christmas Day meeting with Viet Cong for prisoner release is planned north of Saigon near the Cambodian border.
