In the weekend before a three day Christmas cease fire, heavy combat raged across South Vietnam. North Vietnamese forces attacked near Saigon, with 103 killed in a six hour clash 44 miles northwest of Saigon, while 17 American soldiers died and 12 were wounded. Additional fighting 16 miles southeast of Saigon left 12 government troops dead and 38 wounded, as U.S. Navy helicopter units aided. Civilian casualties included 12 killed and 19 wounded in Da Nang outskirts from rockets and shellfire.
Cmdr. Lloyd M. Bucher and 81 surviving crewmen described the final weeks of captivity as the most concentrated terror. He said many were beaten, some with a four by four timber, and several men remained in poor condition from malnutrition and injuries. The crew,staying near Seoul for medical checks, planned to fly to San Diego for Christmas.
Apollo 8 crews report good health as they race toward lunar gravity. Commander Borman Lovell and Anders expect a 69 mile high orbit after a 4:59 a m burn. Flight controllers say spacecraft and crew are in essentially perfect condition despite a cooling valve issue.

Paris AP report says the Viet Cong refused direct talks with South Vietnam as proposed by Vice President Ky. Tran Buu Kiem of the NLF cites Saigon rulers as unacceptable representatives and rules out equal status for the NLF in negotiations. Ky plans direct talks but insists talks stay in South Vietnam and reject a coalition with Communists.
AP reports space doctor Dr. Charles Berry says it is almost certain all three Apollo 8 astronauts will contract a flu like virus. Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders are in close quarters, with Borman already showing gastrointestinal symptoms.
