A Soviet government communique reported the execution by firing squad of ex minister Viktor Aba kumo and five former State Security Ministry aides for treason and political sabotage. In AEN Pa Susquehanna River an eight year old boy broke a swath of ice and clung to a cake of ice as rescuers pulled him from the freezing water. He was numb but clung on until seconds before help arrived. Barry, shocked and exposed, was unconscious and placed in an oxygen tent with grave condition.
Noel H Field and his wife Herta K Field, American citizens once jailed five years in Prague and Budapest on spy charges, were granted political asylum by the Hungarian People’s Republic. The release follows their earlier discharge with charges dropped and signals they will not return to the United States.
Four boys, separated from their mother for five years, were reunited with Mrs. Elsie Rhoades Hill in Shenandoah Iowa. She arrived with her husband from New York to embrace the boys and their grandmother described nightly prayers for her return. The reunion ended with tears and promises to never part again.
Early Christmas Eve reveals two deadly accidents in North Carolina. Franklin Haywood, 21, of Boardman, Rt 1, died when his car lost control in Wilson. An alleged plot to assassinate a union official was foiled when James E. Cobb alias Frank Green, 33, of Tampa, Fla, was arrested in Montvale on charges of conspiracy to commit murder. Prosecutors say Cobb planned to ambush Paul for the Seafarers Union AFL and was to be paid $15,000. Immersed in the case are associates Carmen Phiore and Edward Taffe. rival Ray White of Tampa was also arrested.
