A Here Are some notes and quotes and other trivia that May be used to impress your friends during today Sulla a. C. State basketball game and if they stay through that there maybe a Little on the Liberty bowl thrown in also. Everybody remembers something about Urcla. For the Carolina fans it May be the losses during the Lew Alcindor years in the National finals in 1967. 1968 and 1969. Most recently Maryland fans will remember How one shot that that was t taken Cost the terrapins the Ball game. That a the Way it goes. Most people remember Urcla for beating somebody. But for the youngsters who might not otherwise remember that far Back Urcla is not an unbeatable team. The most famous defeat Wasny to the last one either. Everybody remembers Houston in 1968 when Elvis Hayes out dulled the one eyed Alcindor for a two Point Victory. Who made the winning Points. Hayes from the foul line. Who was the last team to defeat Urcla it was notre Dame and Austin Carr by seven Points on Jan. 23, 1971 in South Bend. That a another reason Urcla coach John wooden likes to stay As close to Home As he can when playing for the big cookie. It s established now that the Bruins Are working on a 78-Gamc winning Streak a record which broke san Francisco s modest total of 60 when Bill Russell was playing Back in the 1950s. Can you recall the teams which have found Success against Urcla since feb 19. 1966? there Aren t Many because Urcla has lost Only one of their last 98 games. Here they Are Houston in the Astrodome 1968. Southern California by two at Urcla in 1969. Oregon by 13 at Oregon in 1970 and Southern California by one at Urcla in 1970. Except for the one Post loss to Maryland the other week the Bruins Haven to had a one Post Victory since feb. 12,1971. And during All this streaking there have been no overtime games. In other words. Urcla pretty much has had things its own Way for almost a decade. Maybe All the publicity Over the basketball game Over the Liberty bowl is justified. Hardly is a word heard outside of Raleigh about the football game. From a Money standpoint the basketball game should rate higher state is expected to take Home something like $90,000 for playing Urcla. By the time the football team divides its take with the rest of the Atlantic coast conference the big Pool of dollars will have dried up considerably and coach Lou Holtzm club will bring Back less than the Basket Baller. That does t figure out too Well per player since Holtz is taking 66 players for his game and Norman Sloan is taking just 15. And no pads. By Jim Pettit. To lose Star Forward Billy Cunningham for at least eight weeks goes about 9 5 on a Richter scale of disaster but to lost your first game without the former North Carolina great in overtime is almost too much. And it was t even Ordinary overtime either. The cougars bowed in three overtimes longest contest in team history to the Utah stars 132-130 before a sparse crowd of 5.800 at the Greensboro coliseum the announcement about Cunnigham came late Friday afternoon when doctors at Duke University Hospital confirmed that the 6-7 Aba most valuable player has a blocked kidney requiring immediate surgery. Cunningham. 30. Will enter new York City s Flowers Hospital sunday and undergo surgery wednesday. The blocked kidney which has caused Cunningham intense pain in recent games is apparently congenital and according to the eight year Veteran has a possibly existed since birth a Cougar general manager Carl Scheer was stunned when he Learned of the ailment. A needless to say it s come As quite a he offered. A but we just have to regroup and pull ourselves together. You done to lose the league s my and not feel it. In a confident Larry and the Guys will come out of it the Eastern division leading cougars did. Indeed put up a Good fight against the powerful stars leaders of the a a a Western division after three periods of close but uninspired play the cougars went to work erasing an 11-Point Utah Lead and pull ing into a 92-92 regulation tie on Mack Calvin s three Point Field goal with la seconds left. Utah s Willie Wise scored a Dunk shot with la seconds left in the first overtime to knot the score again at 106. And Calvin bombed in another three Pointer with just one second to go in the second overtime tying the score at 120. The stars finally prevailed in the third overtime. Jimmy Jones popping in a jumper from the Circle with 11 seconds left to break the game s 14th and last tie the cougars still had two More chances to tie it up again but calving a hurried jumper missed and Steve Jones follow up jumper from the Baseline also went astray As the final Buzzer sounded. I know it took some Ide Man Point Enterprise sports saturday afternoon december 15,1973section b Johnson gets 19 Raider comeback saved by clock Bison explode past Williams Burlington a Quot it gave us a lot of satisfaction to go Down there and High Point Central coach Roger Hedgecock noted happily. Quot we Haven to beaten Burlington Williams in three the Bison had Little trouble with the Jeff Crompton less bulldogs Friday night outscoring their hosts in every period in breezing to a solid 81-63 Victory. Somebody suggested at a press conference this week that perhaps Urcla and state should scrimmage each other Here since they both had workouts planned Friday for the Arena within a couple of hours of each other. Urcla was flying in about the same time state was. But both got a Little mixed up on the times. Wooden had to figure his plans several times before he was sure of himself. Sloan had to do the same thing since both teams Are heading into different time zones. Quot i Don t even know when we play Quot Sloan said. Quot is it 4 o clock our time or their time. I guess 1 11 find out. Anyway Well be there waiting a a some More of Sloan a thoughts on today s game Quot i think it will be like any game Between two Fine teams. Ii somebody gets it going they will be hard to beat Quot As Lar As officiating is concerned i Don t care whether the game is called close or Loose. The Only Way officiating can Handicap you is if your players get in foul trouble Quot we Haven to done the same thing in every Ball game yet this game will takes its own shape just like our first two in a anxious to see myself How it will the Woll Paek won t spend any extra time celebrating or crying after the game. Travel plans Call for the team to head Back Home right after the contest. Also there was no practice scheduled for this morning. A a people have criticized state for opening its basketball season with people like Vermont and East Carolina while Maryland jumped right in with the big one. What they done to know is that the television people tried to get Maryland to switch dates so the Prospect of an upset would be taken away. It s said that Maryland turned Down around $25,000 to keep its original Date. Now Back to the Ball game. Jaybird bump Randleman twice Sharpshooter guard Ron Johnson led the winners with 19 Points followed by Mitchell Little and Chris Collins with 12 each and Earl Martin with to Eddie Foust topped Burlington with 25 and Wayne Cole added 18. A we played real Well Quot Hedgecock added enjoying the aftermath of centrals fourth Victory against one defeat. A we shot 58 per cent from the floor. Bonnie Johnson had a real Good game offensively and defensively we put him on Cole in the third Quarter and he shut him out a Jerry Fulford did a real Good Job for us too. Despite the fact he spent a third of the game on the Bench because of fouls. He was our leading rebounded with 14 Quot Hedgecock was also pleased with the off the Bench performance of 6-4 senior Forward Chris Collins a the came off the Bench and got 12 Points and eight rebounds and that helps out a the Bison have one More non conference game before tackling the conference schedule and Hedgecock sees the team making Progress. Quot we were Able to run on Burlington i think we re Able to run with about any team except Andrews and possibly Reynolds. We have to control the Tempo against teams like that. But we re Quick enough and like to run when we get the Chance. The key for us this year though has been the defense. Defensively we be played Verv Well so Central .17 it 70 70-11 Williams. I d have died right there on the High Point Andrews head basketball coach George Foree whistled. The shot a 25-footer by Winston Salem Reynolds Sam Campbell stripped the net cleanly. But one second too late As Andrews preserved a 55-54 non conference Victory Friday night at the Greensboro coliseum. The raiders who shot miserably All evening came from behind to defeat the demons squaring the Andrews season record at 3-3. Reynolds claimed a two Point decision in an earlier meeting Between the two schools. A this was probably our Best game of the Foree added Quot although we did t shoot Well. We Only shot 18 per cent in the second half we were fortunate that they shot Only 28 per the raiders were behind As much As seven Points 42-35> in the third Quarter when they notched Only two Field goals one of those coming at the Buzzer. Six free throws and some Chilly shooting from the demons helped the raiders Battle Back to within one. 46-45. Going into the final period. The fourth stanza was nip and tuck the raiders building a slim four Point Lead Only to watch Reynolds Battle Back to take the Lead. 54-53, on Robert Chiles Baseline drive with 2 22 to go. The raiders got Back on top some two minutes later when David Craft was fouled with 19 seconds to go and hit both ends of a one and one each team went to the line once More Lefore the game ended but neither converted and Andrews second Chance almost proved ital. Elwood Michael went to the line with six seconds left in the game but his first attempt was in and out. Joe Ellison rebounding or the demons and calling time out with just four seconds to go. The raiders set up in a zone press but Reynolds managed to get the Ball across the mid court line to Campbell with two seconds to go. The pass was a Little Long and Campbell bobbled it. Then turned and Cut Loose a 25-footer a heartbeat after the Buzzer sounded a we need to get away from these close games. Foree said a we be got to develop a killer instinct and get ahead by to Points or Roger Legrande led the winners with 18 Points and 12 rebounds Michael picked up 12 Points and 12 rebounds Campbell and ged Doughton topped Demon scoring with 14 Points each a Legrande had his Best Foree continued a and Elwood Michael did a Good Job too. Johnny Evans ran the floor game Well despite the problems he s having with blisters on his feet i thought w Illie Williams got quite a few assists for us. Although he Only scored six Points. And Greg Hill came off the Bench and got some crucial rebounds Quot the raiders held a 40-31 Edge in rebounds but had a poor night on the offensive boards. Halftime 35 20 Allen Jay by Carol Wilson Enterprise sports w Riter Lexington Central Davidson coach Bon Chapman saw his spartans play their Hest basketball of the season Friday night but there was a different picture coming into the Ragsdale Bench As Tiger coach Bon Wyrick Felt several of his athletes were still playing football. Whatever sport was being played the spartans came out on top edging Ragsdale 52-49. Quot this is by far our Best game of the season Quot Chapman commented a your first two we lost in runaways but tonight they began to play the kind of basketball we think we can play All a the lid was on the Basket in the first Quarter Quot he continued. Quot but we started looking inside and hitting the open Man. Which is what we want to do Quot whatever the reason for Central s poor shooting in the first half it left them trailing 17-6. As Danny Craddock helped the tigers off to a fast Start with seven Points in the Early going. But he did not return to the floor in the second Quarter As Wyrick sent in four fresh tigers All of whom until this week had been occupied with Ragsdale football. A we put them in in Hopes of wearing Central Davidson Down Quot explained the Ragsdale coach. A although they had t practice with us until this week they looked solid in practice and we Felt if we could keep five fresh men on the floor we could tire them out but they Don t at this Point really know our defense or our offensive patterns and they still looked like football players out there making a lot of mistakes. I blame them for the loss though our shooting in the second and third quarters was ready bad and that s what Hurt us. Before i had blinked my eyes we were five Points the Tiger mistakes plus some hot shooting by Keith Curry and Erick Varnadore helped pull the spartans even with just under three minutes remaining in the half and Central went on from there to take a 28-23 halftime Lead although the tigers pulled within one Point several times in the final two periods they were never Able to break the Barrier and the spartans held a five Point Lead going into the final minute of play. A Short Bank shot by Mike Vaughn and two Kevin Ile bin free throws put Ragsdale Down 50-49 with six seconds remaining but a backcourt foul gave Central s Johnny Pope a Chance at the line and he Sank both ends of a one and one situation to ice the spartans first win. A we did t really rebound like we should have Quot Wyrick said Quot they re a Small team but they hit the Board Well and Are very patient on offence. We tried to Sag inside to Stop their shuffle offence but they always took the inside shot they re a very Well coached team a besides his Praise for Central Davidson. Wyrick also had some encouraging words for the tigers. A we intend to work hard during Christmas and get everyone in basketball he said a a we be got a Good group of kids that has been with us All along even during football season and once our football players come around we should play some Good centrals Curry took the game s High scoring honors see spartans on 3b boys Gam Ragsdale 17 6 3 13?49 Central Davidson 6 22 i 12-52 Ragsdale 149 a Rickman 2 heroin 4, Craddock la Bryant a Durham a. We were up by four Points first overtime and then got called for an offensive rebounding foul that turned things around for them Quot we know we have a difficult time ahead of us we have to do without Billy and we have to adjust it would have been a tremendous lift for us to win tonight it s going to he very difficult. We need to get some people healthy because the Load is going to be distributed among a lot of people Quot had the cougars won. The game might still have been in doubt Utah protested the contest at the close of the second overtime when. With one second left the Buzzer sounded before a Utah inbound pass reached the receiver. Jiminy Jones beneath the Basket Jones made the Short jumper but it was disallowed the officials after a brisk discussion gave the stars another Chance hut this time they missed. It was a night of strange Calls including one warning against the cougars for playing a zone defense Brown who takes great Pride in the cougars tight Man to Man style of Plav was enraged by that Call a i could t believe he was warning us about playing a he grimaced a that s ridiculous Quot the cougars meet the third place new York nets tonight in Charlotte and brow n tried to think ahead i just Hope we can realize we lost to a Good Hall club and go on from he sighed Utah 131 my Foft re.
