Pope Paul VI called for extending Christmas and Vietnamese New Year truces into a single armistice to enable peace talks. He spoke during Mass at St. Peter's, urging both sides to seize the opportunity to end the war and avoid danger by missing it.
Syria's Socialist government announces executive seizure of all properties of Iraq Petroleum Co in Damascus and raises transit royalties for oil shipments to Europe. They set up three committees to oversee operations as talks with the company founder falter.
Michigan Governor George Romney conducts public appearances and private calls in New York for 1968 Republican presidential hopes. He says he will decide in six months, with talks about possible private outreach to Nixon and Lindsay. Laxalt reports Hall backing Romney in the West. Nixon's own plans not discussed. Rockefeller meets Romney in Puerto Rico but stays noncommittal.
Aegean Sea disaster as the 8,900 ton Heraklion sank between Crete and Piraeus during a storm. Of 281 aboard 47 rescued. 206 passengers and crew feared dead. Wreckage and survivors reported near Milos as planes dropped lifebelts and rafts.
President Johnson announced a pact among the United States the Soviet Union and other nations to bar nuclear arms from space and guarantee access to the moon and other celestial bodies. The draft treaty prepared by the UN Outer Space Committee calls for ratification by the Senate next year and marks a key arms control step since the 1963 Limited Test Ban Treaty. Johnson also noted considering Pope Paul VI’s Viet Nam truce proposal and planned return to Washington after a 20 day stay at his Texas ranch.
A nighttime fire at a Turkish barracks killed 65 sleeping soldiers and injured 27 after a gasoline tin exploded near a stove. Gen Fikret Esen said the blaze was started by the blast amid overnight chaos.
Walter F. Anderson says he will conduct his own inquiry to learn why Attorney General Wade Bruton dismissed him as director of the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation. Bruton announced the resignation effective January 7 and denied any link to personnel issues or civil rights probes.
In Glenrothes Scotland public toilets in the town center were fitted with a tape recorder to play soft music. The cost to use the facilities rose from one penny to three, and the Performing Rights Society said the taped music constitutes a public performance requiring a license. The matter will be debated by the town council.
