In Saigon two youth gunmen killed 58 year old Tran Van Van, a wealthy landowner and leading Constituent Assembly member. One gunman confessed he was a Viet Cong terrorist, after a procheal arrest near the U S Ambassador Lodge residence.
A blast wrecked a car belonging to a member of the southern faction who ran for the Constituent Assembly on a pro southernism platform. U S pilots flew 70 strike missions over North Vietnam targeting lines of communication and storage in Hanoi Haiphong and Dien Bien Phu areas and the southern panhandle. Air Force crews knocked out a bridge northeast of Dien Bien Phu while Navy fliers hit 10 cargo barges northwest of Dong Hai. One American jet was lost to a Communist Mig 17 the first since July with the pilot missing. Since attacks began 22 months ago six planes have been lost to MiGs and 26 MiGs shot down with possibly two more. In South Vietnam B 52s struck a suspected base camp east of Kontum as destroyers Ironsoll and Keppler damaged four barges off Dong Hoi.
President Johnson said Vietnam war outlays through June 30 will exceed prior projections by nine to ten billion dollars and plans to ask Congress for a supplemental appropriation. He avoided discussing a possible 1967 tax increase and noted new data aid his decision.
London AP reports the BBC canceled Dennis Potter’s Almost Cinderella a modern take showing Cinderella in a miniskirt and a troubled Prince Charming. Potter says, I intend to quit BBC television. The decision follows controversy over the play’s adult themes and a midnight strangulation scene.
In Gainesville Georgia a write in Batman received one vote while Howard James and Joseph Stargel each got 674 votes. Officials repeated tabulations and found identical results, creating a tied election with no runoff provision. City Attorney Guier must research how to resolve the unusual result.
