Spencer reports 52 new workers arrived for the Southern railway shops. They were met by officers, escorted inside, and the shops began operating on full time with double shifts as the strike situation eased. Volunteers guard the Jimison home while warrants issued for J F Barrett. Prosecuting Attorney notes papers issued.
Local Kiwanis club adopts two resolutions including condemnation of striking railroad crews amid the Herrin Ilinois massacre and calls for justice for lawbreakers. They praise Governor Morrison and Fairfax Harrison and urge national unity under American constitutional principles. The luncheon featured talks on law and medicine and a local musical interlude.
Miss Peggy Conway of San Francisco is chosen as mascot for the Disabled American Veterans World War convention to be held in Minneapolis in 1923. She served as a host at this year's San Francisco convention and has long devoted effort to entertaining and aiding wounded soldiers in local hospitals.
Salisbury and Spencer saw quiet after trainmen switchmen and clerks returned to work following troop withdrawal. Volunteer guards watched Rev From P Jimison’s home overnight. Col Don E Scott offered 500 soldiers to guard it, but no danger was seen. Scott moved his headquarters to the soldiers camp at the fairgrounds.
Salisbury authorities issued a warrant for J F Barrett editor of the Charlotte Labor Herald charging drunk and disorderly conduct and another warrant alleging concealed weapon possession. The prosecutor said Barrett left town for Charlotte and that about five witnesses will testify, names withheld.
The Magna Charta Day association will present President Harding a 22 by 30 inch colored frame showing the seals of the signers. J W Hamilton, secretary, announced in St Paul. Governor E Lee Trinkle of Virginia will also receive a Magna Charta copy for issuing Magna Charta Day proclamation.
Cotton futures opened firm with October at 22.85, December 22.80, March 22.60 and May 22.50. Early activity saw gains of 80 to 382 points after the call as December rose to 22.84 on covering and new buying spurred by strong Liverpool cables and adverse weather reports.
In GOLDSBORO on August 23, farmers increasingly join the cotton growers cooperative contract. Reports from nearby areas show many signers, though one farmer said he lost 20 dollars on a bale and could not find a contract to sign promptly.
The giant seaplane Sampaio Correia, flying from Nassau toward Haiti and then to Rio de Janeiro, wrecked after a miscalculation near Nassau. Five crew members including Pilot Hinton were saved by the cruiser Henner and a naval tug was sent from Cuba to salvage and resume the flight to the Centennial exposition in Rio de Janeiro.
London reports the assassination of Michael Collins at Bandon county court following an IRA raid announcement. Collins was killed by ambush after an ovation in Cork. Details are scant as newspapers note the end of organized warfare in southern Ireland.
Dublin reports the daileirean will likely summon a meeting this Saturday in response to the assassination of Michael Collins. A national funeral with full military honors will be held with his body lying in state before interment at Glasnevin Cemetery.
Michael Collins, commander of the Free State Army, died after being shot while visiting posts in Cork. He reportedly cried for forgiveness as gunfire beat back republican irregulars en route to Bandon. His body was moved to a steamer for transport to Dublin.
Zion Methodist and Cherry Street Presbyterian plan a large joint picnic at White Oak just outside Greensboro. The event serves as a Sunday school celebration with basket lunches carried by families and a nine o clock start. Both congregations invite all members to attend regardless of Sunday school participation.
Judge Edmund Waddell in Richmond issued a restraining order blocking striking shopmen on the Southern railway system in seven states from interfering with train movement or workers and from stationing more than one picket within 200 yards of any station yard shop or roundhouse.
Washington August 23 After the first voting to give preference to the Bland coal investigating bill the house rules committee reversed itself and reported out the Winslow administration bill for a commission composed of impartial representatives of the public.
In Philadelphia on August 23, anthracite coal operators and miners representatives held separate meetings after negotiations toward settlement were broken off yesterday. Many believed the core dispute remained unsolved and unlikely to be settled soon, delaying the return of about 155,000 workers.
Pittsburgh August 23 scale committee of the Pittsburgh Coal Producers association ordered the 1920 22 scale posted in all mines owned and operated by its members but refused the United Mine Workers demand that the scale be in force about 45000 miners affected district offices said miners would not return to work until the full union scale had been signed
Railway executives met in New York on August 23 to consider a proposed shopmen settlement from mediating running trades chiefs. After over two hours, they adjourned at 12:50 and rescheduled for 2:30. Rumors said counter proposals were under review and peace could still be possible if Brotherhood leaders’ suggestions were not accepted. Howard Elliott of Northern Pacific called the situation serious.
Friends of Wade Barnhardt at 215 Redding street mourn the deaths of infant twins Herman Thurman Barnhardt and Thurman Barnhardt. Herman died Saturday morning and Thurman died Sunday night. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 2 30 PM at the home, Rev. C V Brooks officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Bethlehem Steel announces a 20 percent wage increase for common labor with equitable adjustments for other employee classes, effective September 1. President F. E. Grace states the move as part of the company's wage policy at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Local reports from the chamber of commerce and the Southern Furniture Manufacturers association project a twelve month coal need around 51 110 tons, rising toward 60 000 with additional factory and retailer inputs. Current on hand fuel supplies show a shortage in High Point.
Kiwanian Vivian Parker, local Texaco agent, presented each Kiwanian at the luncheon with a one half gallon can of Texaco motor oil. The easy pour cans were placed at each plate before the meal, drawing appreciation from members who rely on cars needing occasional oil.
W. T. Turner of Greensboro division freight agent and M. L. Dunn of Greensboro special traffic agent helped in the Southern Railway yards to keep traffic moving during the nationwide railway shopmen strike. Other Greensboro officials joined in in shops and yards elsewhere. General mechanical repair and steam coupling were part of the duties.
Under Wesley Memorial Methodist church the Ladies Aid Society will host a $3,000 lyceum course in High Point with ten attractions across fall winter and spring. Noted speakers and musicians will be brought in. The first presentation is planned for October.
Huntington West Virginia August 23 Justice B Baker a 27 year old pugilist nicknamed Soldier Baker is jailed after Albert Lucas a teamaster was killed on an uptown street Sunday night. Police say Baker struck Lucas with his fist while drunk, Lucas died from a broken neck. Baker denies involvement.
Raleigh business leaders plan a new 1800 seat theater to replace the old opera house. The cooperative cotton merchants acquired the venue, and officials aim to attract first rate road shows with modern accommodations.
In Raleigh the Democratic Party bids to publish a new handbook as a final word on doctrine. State Chairman Dave Norwood dismisses calls to convene a convention for Mrs. Vaughn’s seat, while labor unions spar over troop involvement after a post office clash. Separate items note high school principals conferences and a new Oxford orphanage hospital project costing over 100000 dollars.
Paschal and Son, owners of Victor Shoe Repair, were tried in municipal court for operating without a license. The case was suspended on payment of costs with a requirement to obtain a license immediately. Only a few other cases, including several drunkenness cases, were disposed of this morning.
The first cotton crop of 1922 in Richmond county was ginned here ten days ago as a few bales passed through the machinery. The boll weevil infestation is largely blamed for the slow start.
