Congress Should Move Carefully Tax Reform At Expense Of The Church
A Senate Finance Committee debate on tax reform warns that broad changes could hollow out charitable giving and nonprofits. It argues life income contracts, charitable remainder trusts, and tax incentives help fund colleges, churches, hospitals, and private charities, and warns reforms may tax appreciated securities or real estate, drying up donations. The piece defends private sector funding for health, education, and welfare, urging reform without harming essential institutions.
