Indians Feuding Over Federal Recognition in Maxton
In Robeson County two tribes the Lumbee and the Tuscarora Indians fight over federal recognition land and the Lumbee Act of 1956. The Tuscarora Tribal Council filed a damages suit against the United States and North Carolina seeking recognition and possible reservation status. Lumbee leaders warn such a move could threaten their access to federal services while urging a peaceful path within existing law.
