Allied gains push to the Ourey river area near Hartennes and Fere En Tardenois. Forces secure high ridges between the Oureq and the Aisne and threaten Bazoches and Fismes. Ville En Tarnedois enters allied hands as German defenses near the Vesle are disrupted.
London Aug 2 The liberal press questions Premier Lloyd George on using the economic weapon against Germany after the war. The American view reportedly will not endorse his plan. Also from France Aug 2 Ville En Tardenois area circled by Allied forces as they advance taking towns and villages while the enemy resists and suffers losses.
A small American, described as a shrimp of a man, disarmed a German foe during a melee on the Marne. The German, about to bayonet the American, was repelled when the American grabbed a grenade, removed the safety, and thrust it into the German's pocket. The explosion destroyed the German's gear, leaving no souvenir for the victor.
Paris reports German casualties since the war began totaling 4,760,000 per L Homme Libre, Clemenceau’s newspaper. It states 5,430,000 Germans remain, with 4,000,000 on the western front, and since March losses reaching about 1,500,000, with one million out of action.
