A London correspondent relays the final capture of Seringes by American forces after three days of village fighting. Germans assaulted from the front while Americans withdrew and then encircled the town, trapping defenders in a ring and engaging in close quarters combat until surrender.
London July 27 British Wireless Service reports mood in German trenches from letters of prisoners. A German soldier writes that Americans are terrible in front and that his company of 130 is reduced to 50, signaling dwindling morale and waning hope in the war effort.
New York August 1 The cotton market opened a touch steadier but prices fell for the day with October futures slipping under 25 cents. Cables eased and cooler southwest temperatures helped, with October at 24.96 and December at 24.31, several points lower. Futures opened at 24.95 for October and 24.35 for December.

Mauline Williford aged four died yesterday morning at the parents home on East Green Street. The funeral was held at 11 o'clock from the residence with services by Rev. W. H. Wall of East Green Street Baptist church. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery.
