Controversial Chess Set by Gonzaga Student in Spokane
Kenneth J. Spiering, a Gonzaga University art student, crafts an unusual chess set on stoneware for a plan pitting “Revolutionaries” against the “Establishment” with Angela Davis and Spiro Agnew as queens and Nixon as a king. The pieces, each about four hours to make, include a policeman and National Guardsman as Establishment knights and Che Guevara as the revolutionary king.
