Southern political image study finds party views and segregation ties
The UNC analysis by Prothro and Matthews uses UNI VAC 1105 to gauge how whites and Negroes identify with Democrats or Republicans. It finds strong linkages between party image and attitudes toward segregation or integration, with whites leaning Democratic but favorable to segregation at high levels and Negroes showing opposite patterns. The study notes many unregistered Negro voters, potential realignment worries, and predicts gradual Republican gains via urbanization and education.
