The Old Dominion University board of visitors formally applied for Division I membership in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, effective this fall. ODU, NCAA Division I basketball champion in 1975 and semifinalist in other years, will move to Division I status in the coming year.
Before a record Cleveland crowd of 21,312, the Cavaliers beat the Bullets 91-90 in a taut playoff clash. Washington led 91-90 with 37 seconds left as Elvin Hayes missed two free throws, Cleveland ball out of bounds after a Chones foul, Bobby Smith’s shot caromed and Cleamons secured the rebound for the Cavaliers.
