Poetry Styles Liven Readings at North Carolina Event
Two North Carolina poets, Mrs. Sally Buckner and Paul Newman, performed at the High Point College Spring Poetry Festival last Friday. Buckner offered an antiwar piece “Two Children” and other works while Newman presented traditional forms with film and guitar accompaniment, referencing a Myrtle Beach marker about George Washington.

Service to Mankind Award Presented by High Point Sertoma Club
Mrs. June McGhee received the annual Service to Mankind Award for her volunteer work as a deaf interpreter at church services weddings and funerals. She also teaches sewing and sign language to the deaf. Presenters Hugh Kellam and Cliffe Peele attended at the Top of the Mart.

California Jam draws huge crowds at Ontario speedway
At Ontario Motor Speedway thousands of rock fans packed the venue for California Jam. Organizers put attendance around 200000, with teen attendees amid heat in the high 80s. Police kept traffic control outside while inside safety personnel treated about 20 drug related cases and sunburns.
