Extend Draft For A Year No Inductions

Washington April 6 the house military committee proposed extending the draft for a year but banning inductions of anyone becoming eligible during that period. Rep Harness argued for a no induction plan while maintaining registrations under the selective service act and limiting inductions after May 15 to those previously eligible. The committee delayed a decision, fearing lack of votes to block the Harness plan, and also rejected raising the draft age from 18 to 20 and banned inductions of fathers and farmers. Harness said the aim was to stop inductions when the current law ends.
