Washington April 6. Negotiations to end the week old 400000 soft coal miners strike continued into today with public exchanges between John L. Lewis and Harry H. Moses of U S Steel. Lewis accused Moses of seeking a secret pact to keep captive mines running and offered a separate contract plan. Moses said operators knew of the talks and proposed extending current contracts retroactively to April 1 for 30 to 60 days while negotiations continue.
The United States and Britain back a Paris April 25 spadework meeting to break a deadlock over postwar treaties for Italy and four ex Axis satellites. France signals support while Russia remains silent amid concerns over a 21 nation conference and shared trusteeship for Italy's colonies under United Nations oversight.
