City Schools Open With Record Enrollment Across Grades
The opening day of the city graded schools set a record with 143 high school pupils enrolled, up from 122 last year. Most promoted seventh graders reached eighth grade on day one and 44 eighth graders were promoted to ninth. Officials warn a new high school building is essential to accommodate Hickory and nearby districts' students.

A Southern Railway wreck near Connelly Springs left one man, Charles Lindsay of Burke County, dead beside the track around dawn. The body was found about twenty-five yards from the wreckage as crews investigated. Passenger trains diverted at the scene while Nos. 12 and 21 awaited clearance for several hours. no crew injuries reported.
