Six hour gun battle ends with suicide in San Francisco
In San Francisco on September 12 a six hour clash pitting 60 policemen against George Nelson, a 25 year old foreigner wanted in a Los Angeles bank robbery, ended at dawn with Nelson dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a rooming house across from Bishop Edwin Hughes home. Police say they fired from an upper window as a searchlight watched. Officer Peter Hammond was wounded and lodger Hugh McBeth was possibly fatally hurt. three automatic revolvers and ammo were found near the body. Nelson likely killed himself to avoid capture after daylight threatened arrest.
