Destructive Hickory Fire Devastates Mfg Plant
A massive blaze gutted the Hickory Manufacturing Company plant late Saturday, destroying two acres and threatening nearby mills. The fire caused about 9101,000 in damage, with insurance of 916,000, and left about 60 workers unemployed. Fire crews from Hickory and Piedmont Wagon Company saved other buildings, while books and some mill work were recovered or saved.

Leg Break Accident In Newton On Busy Road
Robert Bostam aged 23 of Newton sustained a fractured leg after a motorcycle he rode collided with an automobile driven by Cicero Shore on the Newton road near Oyama. He was rushed to Richard Baker hospital where Dr Shuford plated the leg. Both vehicles were wrecked and the crash echoed a previous fatal accident on the same curve involving Rome Blanton.

The wedding of Joseph Hoffman of this city and Lilly Carter of Albemarle occurred at the bride’s mother Elizabeth Carter home in Albemarle Thursday afternoon. The ceremony featured music by Mrs. J. R. Price and Mrs. R. E. Brooks, with Mendelssohn march. The bride wore midnight blue and carried a bride’s rose. The groom, son of H. F. Hoffman of High Point, is a pharmacist. he played varsity track captain at the state university. Guests included family from High Point, Goldsboro, Hickory, Thomasville, and Whitney. The couple will reside in Hickory after November 20.

Seventh Annual Fair Draws Record Crowds Here
The seventh annual Catawba County Fair drew record crowds over Wednesday Thursday and Friday with ideal weather. Attendance on day two ranged 15 000 to 20 000. Prizes awarded included best decorated country auto and best decorated city auto, with various honors to local residents. An educational parade featured Lenoir College and multiple schools. livestock poultry and horse shows drew praise, while the fair grounds hosted films and rides. The event showcased high quality school exhibits and a well behaved crowd, with plans to return to the fairgrounds next year.

Jeres Messrs. Thomas P. Pruitt and George Andrew Warlick were sworn in as attorneys at Newton court. Marshall versus the City of Hickory was compromised with about $100 damages to the plaintiff. The city awarded an 18 cent per cubic yard contract to G. A. Huggins to grade Highland avenue and top soil the street. The grand jury reported the county home and courthouse in good condition and magistrates returned fines for the school to fund. An exhibit in the poultry department featured Japanese chickens owned by Dr. Flowers of Longview. A. W. Sanborn of Bakers Mountain visited the city with three long-haired cats, noting a $50 offer for his large gray cat. the other two were white and noted as beautiful felines.

Settlement Reached in Railway Collision Deaths Case
The Newton court compromised the suit by the parents of J. W. Biggs and E. C. Bridges, who were fatally injured near Conover last summer when their car was struck by a Southern Railway engine. The railroad agreed to pay 4500 dollars to each family.
