South Fork Baptist Holds Annual Meeting at West Hickory Church

The South Fork Baptist Association met at West Hickory Baptist Church on October 27 with Rev J B Connell preaching the introductory sermon from Psalm 11825. Delegates organized, reports were read, and the body adjourned for dinner. Center View joined the association, and officers were elected. The gathering drew about 160 delegates and visitors from 57 churches, with 6395 Sunday school enrollees and 508 baptisms for the year. Financial gifts to missions and education were announced, and plans for next year were set. Local notes also cover wartime items and community news.

The Catawba County Hog Club led by President John S Hildebrand and Secretary R C Perry will meet at the Catawba Creamery in Hickory on Saturday November 27. The club aims to improve hog raising and the local community invites all interested to attend and learn about the club’s plans.

Reformation Sermon at Lenoir College in Savannah

Rev W Nuppe of Church of the Ascension preached the annual Reformation sermon commemorating Luther’s 398th anniversary by God’s word. A practical talk on Luther's life and teachings followed with a fine choir. Holy Trinity Church joined the college service. The Maguluccus theatre near the express office opened with Coral, a Universal Pictures production.

Tragic Fire Destroys St John Parochial School Peabody

In Peabody Massachusetts a blaze ripped through St John Parochial School as 600 pupils stood in for fire drill. Many children perished from crush at the front exit while others escaped via stairs and windows. Sister Mother Superior Marie Carmelita led evacuations as flames trapped the rear doors.

Elon College Faculty Residence Burned In Fire

S A Cavinese returned to Greensboro from Elon College with news of a costly fire yesterday afternoon that destroyed the residence of Dr E E Randolph on the college campus. The house and its library and scientific material belonging to Dr Randolph and his brother Dr E O Randolph were all lost. The dwelling was valued around $5 000 with little or no insurance carried.

Presbyterian Synod tomeet in Salisbury next year

The North Carolina Presbyterian synod adjourned its annual session in Justonia Vet and will meet next year in Salisbury. The Asheville presbytery has been transferred to the new Appalachian synod which will hold its first session at Bristol next week.

Calls for National Committee Meetings In Washington

Democratic and Republican leaders issued calls for meetings in Washington to select cities for the National Inventions with dates set for December 7 by the Democrats and December 14 by the Republicans. Chairman Charles D Hilles outlined a campaign program attacking tariff handling in Europe and Mexico, criticizing the administration for breaking promises and the 1912 platform including a single term plank.

Brookford Mill appoints permanent receiver at meeting

At a meeting of the creditors of the Brookford Mill company held here last week H. J. Holbrook was named permanent receiver by Referee Pearson. Minority stockholders, through Bascom Blackwelde, Self & Bagby and W. B. Council, filed exception. Julliard interests were represented by C. W. Tillett, K. C. Menzies, and E. Lyerly, with A. A. Whitener acting as attorney for the mill.
