Empress of Ireland Sinks After Collision on St Lawrence
The Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Ireland sank within minutes after a bow collision with the Danish collier Storstad in the upper St Lawrence near Father Point Quebec. Of 1287 aboard, 433 saved, about 994 presumed dead. Rescue boats Eureka and Lady Evelyn saved most survivors, while Rimouski residents shoered aid to the injured. Notable passengers including Sir Henry Seton Karr and Laurence Irving were among the missing or dead.
